Mailbox structures on parking strip in HOA

Who is responsible for the maintenance of mailbox structures that are situated on parking strips within an HOA community? Is it the property owner to which the mailbox(es) relate? Or is it the responsibility

of the HOA to maintain the structures?

In my previous Association, we had rural mailboxes in an enclosure.

The Association was responsible for the enclosure. The member was responsible for the actual mailbox.

Do your governing documents say anything about the enclosures?

Are there past board minutes that have the Association repairing or replacing the enclosures?

This is an HOA subdivision. Mailbox structures are located in the parking strip - sometimes there are up to three mailboxes in each structure. There is no reference to who has maintenance responsibility of the structures into which the mailboxes are incorporated.

How old is the development?

We did a full rebuild every 10 to 15 years and that was in Northern VA. I would expect Oregon to have much more wear and tear on the structures.

You might have to take the time and look at all the minutes to see if work on the structures were approved or look at all of the financials to see if a check was written for materials o

Our association has multiple cluster mailboxes. The board is responsible for the maintenance of these mailboxes.

Observations:

-- Check either the HOA Declaration or the plats on file with the county. Do they show the parking strips to be common area? If so, this is a strong argument for the association being responsible for maintaining the mailbox structure (located on the common area).

-- Whether the individual owners are responsible for the structures, or the HOA is, will result in about the same cost to the owners.

-- I expect uniformity of appearance of the mailbox structures adds value to homes. If the HOA maintains the structures, chances are much greater that the appearance will be uniform.
