We've had two board members announce their resignation at the end of the year this year, so are looking for two replacement board members to fill their spots.

How best do we find replacement board members? We sent out a request for new board members to join the board along with the assessments coupon for next year, and heard crickets in response. I have e-mailed the people I know of who might make good community leaders, and they have declined. We will try e-mail blasts next.

Wanted to find out how other boards have been successful in recruiting new board members?

As President, I'm sorta feeling guilty about having two board members step down after one year. Makes me a feel a bit like I didn't run the board to the best liking of the other board members. But I know that being on the board is not for everyone and that is just life. Whether right or wrong, my personal goal of being on the board is to make our community a better place, and that is what drives my HOA participation. I am not driven to make our board a fun and enjoyable thing for other board members.

Henry,

I understand your concerns.

The best way I found individuals to step up was to ask them directly.

Seek out those who you think would be good for the community.

I've also had many step up with nominations from the floor.

The only way we have recruited new Board members is through personal contact. Not email to an individual, but face to face personal contact.

I agree. Talk to people.

So--these are vacancies. How long would a replacement serve? Till the next election? Or till the term is up, which is when?

Try this, Henry. Make a quick survey to send out about owners' ideas for use of your parks (the topic of another of you threads). Hold a Town Hall style meeting to get more opinions and feedback. Watch and listen to responses. Later, personally approach e members who seem to be interested in your HOA, have ideas, etc.

I think in the past you wrote you're rather shy. Well, try to overcome it so you can contact these individuals.

Are the two resigning those who've been complaining that you send too many emails to directors?

I agree with Kerry ideas. I think most people do not step up because they do not understand what they need to do. What the time commitment is and also how things work in your HOA. How the board works with the PM and the PMC if you have one. I have seen your posts but can't remember if you are self managed.

I would have a Coffee time with some donuts and juice and invite people to come hear a very short presentation and then ask them for questions. Many times this starts conversations. Worst case you may see someone who you can contact later to speak to in more detail. Make sure you get a sign in sheet so you have a way to get in touch.

The board can always use new volunteers and I always am on the lookout for people that can plug holes in the team we already have with their talents. I always tell people that you can give as much or as little as you wish with the exception of attending meetings and responding to emails. If you tell them, it is a thankless job which we know it is you will run them off early.

I have always had good luck at our Social events when I just meet other owners.
