Hi friends,

We are seeking a new accountant and bookkeeping service and would like our candidate to have extensive HOA expertise and experience. We're OK with working with someone remote. If you have a firm you love that you can recommend, I'd appreciate a referral please. We're in Washington State.

It is much better to have someone local. Easier to sit down with them if problems and/or questions arise. If a lock box is to be used, people are more comfortable using a local bank.

ADD ON

Some Property Management companies offer limited services such as bookkeeping alone. Start there.

The posting rules here don't allow for specific communities or companies to be mentioned, but John's suggestions are a great place to start. You don't say if you're self-managed or have a management company, but either way, be sure you ask for references and CHECK them. A review of your documents would also be helpful in giving you insight on what type of documents the services will be generating for you - they should be prepared in a way people will understand them, along with being complete and accurate.

Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to talk to your association's master insurance (or your association attorney and your bank, as well) about steps you could take to reduce the risk of embezzlement
