Our president of our HOA has a tendency to send emails with literal list of "chores". I am asking if this is often done amongst other HOA's as I have only served on this board. Our lists that come around are not small business, but rather asking for things to be picked up because I have an SUV, or help clean out the office on the weekend, etc.

I once again was just asking if this is a common occurrence on other boards.

Its common in HOA's where everyone pitches in. Common for HOA's who want to keep dues low and everyone work together in thier community to make it a better place.

Not common in an HOA where everyone hates each other and would rather pay someone to do all the chores, but this always results in higher dues, which of course you have to pay.

So its really your choice if you want to help or not.

Its really up to you how much you want to participate. Everything is volunteer so its up to you how much time you are willing to volunteer. Set yourself some limits if this situation isn't working. Say... 1 hour week, but let the president know your limit.

Are you being too kind? Maybe.....
Is the president taking advantage if that? Maybe.....

Find a happy medium if you still want to volunteer.

I can understand being upset with the Board Pres, who appears to have taken it upon himself to delegate these "chores". If yours is a self-managed HOA, I can understand that the Board members may be obligated to do certain chores around the community. However, if this is the case I would think the best way to do this is for all the board members to meet and discuss what needs to be done and who shall be assigned the task of doing it. If something unexpected comes up the Pres could email all the board members and ask for a volunteer. I would not appreciate my board pres telling me he has "assigned" me to do this or that. I wonder what he has assigned himself to do.

I am the President of our POA and I too put together a chore list. One for labor related chores and one for other stuff. I put together the list so the other board members would see it staring them in the face regularly in hopes they would eventually choose an item to put their name by. I do intend to post the list on our website as well in hopes of getting other members in our community to help out too.
We are penny pinchers and I am proud of it!
I have to say that I have been guilty of asking a board member with a tractor to help me pull out silt fence stakes. He is quick to tell me no if he doesn't want to use his tractor for other tasks though and you have to be willing to do that too. What if something happens to your SUV? Our board members tractor broke once and it cost him $800 to get it fixed.
