I know that they are allowed, but I'm trying to gain support for having them at the entrances to our neighborhood to merely help deter would-be solicitors. There is a second group that just wants each individual to put up their own personal signs at their own doors (believing that the neighborhood signs would be ugly, not do any good, or stop "cub scouts" - their own kids - from soliciting).

I understand their points, but not one of them sounds valid provided you find a tasteful sign. I'd be interested to know what other neighborhoods have done, and why?

ToddW:
Our assn. has four entrances into our subdivision and at each is a nice wooden sign with 4x4" posts concreted into ground and only stand about 4' high, white about 2x3' and it reads centered from top to bottom in black:
DEED RESTRICTIONS STRICTLY ENFORCED
NO SOLICITING
NO FIREWORKS

There is a problem though, nothing is enforced. A neighbor, who is a director, has a child who shoots fireworks off all the time. I've spoken to the sheriff and it isn't against the law in our county so nothing they can do about it--the board has to enforce it, well, that's not likely to happen. The sheriff also tells me that it's fine to disallow soliciting via the sign, but if just ONE homeowner buys something from a solicitor, they have their foot into the "door" "subdivision" and are "allowed" in so to speak, so it has to be a cooperative effort among the homeowners to tell a doorknocker there is no soliciting in the neighborhood. If a deputy stops and talks to them and they show him that just one person bought his good or service, the deputy doesn't ask him/her to leave. So I think I would venture to say that if you state "DEED RESTRICTIONS STRICTLY ENFORCED" that that should be done. Our assn. has not put any teeth into their DRs and R&Rs and when insiders or outsiders know they don't, they all take a "mile". Also, about the signs in yards, although we don't disallow "spirit" signs, our deed restrictions state "no signs except a for sale (of the house)" and it even states specific dimensions, which most realtors have signs that size anyway.

Hope this gives you some ideas.
