Our board is screaming because they never get volunteers. The problem is, that is pretty much how they are asking, "We need volunteers!" That approach scares the heck out of people who are afraid of what is going to be thrown at them!

You've heard of how to eat an elephant? One bite at a time. ;)

So, I'm thinking that if we try to set up some committees, people may be more willing to volunteer for a specific project.

What committees does your HOA have? What are their responsibilities?

There is some good information from Community Association Institute title "Board Member Tool Kit".

My email address is [email protected]. Email me and I will send to you. It is too large a file to attach here.

We have a Parking Committee (1 person), Playground Committee (3 people), Neighborhood Watch Committee (0 people) and a Landscaping Committee (0 people). We don't have an Architectural Committee; our Board votes directly on Architectural Applications.

At this point, all of the committee reports routinely report: "Nothing to report." Most people on the committees have run out of steam ... if they had any steam to begin with.

I am the president of our association. We have two formal committees for architecture changes and landscaping. These committees report to the board and are only advisory. I have attached the charters.

Getting and keeping volunteers is hard to do. I'm not sure that there is any magic to solving this problem. I think that what has worked best for us is: a) protect them from owner conflicts by making it clear that all decisions are made by the board and b) recognize their support during membership meetings or in a newsletter.

Susan,

It is very stressful when you as a board member spend many hours a month helping your community and you can't get volunteers for committees.

We only ask that people volunteer for 1 committee which is the most important to our community and that's the convenant's committee(fining committee). We finally got 3 people to volunteer(after asking for 5 yrs) about 5 months ago and they are already asking to be replaced.

Please be understanding to your board, its a thankless job!

We have plenty of people to complain about things but none who want to help.

Barbara
