Our HOA has been run by a management company for the past several years with the board members having minimal participation. We, the board, are now wanting to change that by becoming more self-governing and more knowledgeable about what our duties are. (other than the general description that is listed in the CC&R’s)
Are there any seminars or classes available that teaches this?
A friend that is currently president of a neighboring HOA said their management company offers a ½ day class to explain duties, budgets, reserve studies, etc. When we asked our current management company their response was negative for us to pursue that path.
Thanks
Joyce

JoyceR, for seminars in your area check this link: http://www.caionline.org.

In Colorado, HindmanSanchez will be offering seminars in 2006(on this web site look under the HOA Professionals tab where they are listed under Orten&Hindman). They provide this service to board members at no charge and do an excellent job!

It is great to know you want to become more self-governing and more knowledgeable about what your duties are. And it is deplorable that your management company is not supportive! You may want to evaluate other management companies by sending out a RFP which lists the services needed.

With all the apathy surrounding HOAs, except for complaints, it is heartwarming to read your board wants to become more knowledgeable.

Good luck,
Roger

Is anyone aware of classes in the Indiana area? Our BOD has 5 new members on it for the year 2006. I would love to get everyone educated on the BOD.

Your local Community Associations Institute chapter can be a good resource. The central Indiana chapter is holding an ABC course on the 21st of this month. You can get additional information by visiting their website: http://www.cai-indiana.org/

There is also a chapter in SW Ohio (Cincinnati Area). Their website can be found at: http://www.caiohiovalley.org/

I hope that helps.

Roger,
I don't think "at no charge" is enirely accurate (re Orten & Hindman seminars). The last time I looked, BOD 101 was free, (and there was no charge for the SB-100 classes), but the rest of the BOD series carried a fee depending upon whether you were clients or not.

I don't know what courses are available in your area. I too would recomend that you get to the www.Caionline.org. You can look to see if there is a local chapter that may offer classes. If not, they have a great selection of Books that are exetrememly useful for all aspects of HOA's.
They also have a certain group of publications called the GAP (Guide for Assocation Practioners)reports. There is a publication on the role of the Pres, Tres, Secretary, etc.
Good Luck

CAI now has an organization just for community association volunteers (board, committee members) and 4 levels of training - just for those volunteers. The first level is dowloadable and free to anyone. The second level, an on-line course, is free to members. The 3rd and 4th levels, coordinated by local chapters, are taught in the chapters' areas.
Also - a big deal, all members get a free copy of the "Board Member Tool Kit," a well-written, to-the-point-how to-guide.
Membership Group rates are available for borads - making the entire thing a good deal, maybe the best deal considering the many other resources available to members.
