Hi!

Is anyone living in a state where the emerald ash borer has been found? States affected include: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and several provinces in Canada.

The emerald ash borer is a non-native pest that feasts on ash trees, ultimately killing them. It is my understanding that there are no permanent cost effective treatments for ash trees to prevent an infestation or to save the tree (there is a preventative treatment which is approved in IL which costs a few 100s of $$ & must be done by a licensed professional). In states where found, State Ag Depts. have declared these pests to be a nuisance, developed strategies to deal with them, and implemented requirements with regard to infested trees (the trees must be destroyed per established procedures). Areas where the pest is found may be quarantined with regard to the trees (tree disposal, use as mulch, etc.).

Once found, this can be devastating to a HOA that has ash trees – both aesthetically and financially.

We had 3 parkway trees removed a couple of days ago due to infestation by the ash borer. We have lots of ash trees both on our property and throughout the Village. Our Board, even though they have known of this pest since it was declared a nuisance in IL in 2006, and found in our Village in 2008, has yet to make any plans to deal with this problem.

My Qs, if your state has the emerald ash borer:

What is your HOA doing to be prepared?

Does your Reserve Report address landscaping, in particular this pest (tree removal/disposal and replacement)?

Does your Reserve include $$ to cover the cost of tree disposal? Replacement?

Thanks!
Bonnie
