This may be a silly question. But here it is. Our mailman of 28 years is retiring after being here . I have been getting phone calls asking if as a HOA we should and what can we do to show him our apprication. I know this is not a legal question, but any ideas out there? LaVerne Fl.

Laverne, it's very considerate of you to think about someone who has given you years of service. I'm sure there are individual people who would like to "do something" for your mail carrier. We recently went through this with our "faithful" maintenance man. Although we could not make it an "association topic" nor use association funds to do something for him, we went from person to person and explained that we were taking up a "collection" to do something nice for him. Many people contributed; and we had a card ready for the contributors to sign their best wishes. We explained that no one was obligated to give and that whatever they could give the amount would just be put in the "pot". No documentation of who gave what amount. We were able to buy a very generous gift certificate to a nice restaurant. The card conveyed who contributed and that it wasn't from the association, but from people who really cared. Some people could only contribute $1.00; but that was FINE!!!! Some people gave $5.00 or $10.00 or $20.00. It didn't matter what people gave....the thanks and good wishes were sent. He cried. |

Does your HOA have any kind of club house? If so, you might consider hosting a reception there for the carrier. I also like the idea of taking cards around and allowing people to donate for a gift.

LaverneB....As a sister of two siblings who have been employed by the USPS for well over 25 yrs , I can tell you that whatever you decide to do , your mail carrier will be forever GRATEFUL...... our rural mail carrier retired after many years of faithful service and we raised enough $$ for numerous gift cards for her..We did mostly grocery cards...We knew she had her children and grandchildren living with her and could use the extra $$ to help out...We knew her well enough to know that going to dinner was not her thing....We also got movie tickets for her and her family....... I swear I think she went thru a box of kleenex the day she retired..She was a GREAT AND FAITHFUL mail carrier who went out of her to make sure the mail was delivered properly.....She is "sorely" missed as her replacement acts like it's a burden to have to her job for which she is most handsomely paid to do..Such attitudes anymore ..... My hat is off to you for this warm gesture for your mail carrier.......Have a great weekend - also from a 1/2 rainy 1/2 sunny Florida.....LindaC3

I think any of those comments would do! I love the idea of a party on site, but that may not be realistic. Gift cards are great...
