I have noticed that since our area has become a condo complex.... now 3 years... the same flag has been flying (now somewhat dirty and torn in places) and has never been taken down... In other words, it is left up 24/7.Is this "legal"? I am not wanting to use the word "legal" persay but is there anything wrong with just leaving it up day and night? Actually, there is no one at the condo complex that is in charge.. there are, of course, board members butis it a board member that is to be tasked with the job of taking down and putting up the flag each day? No, the manager can not do it because there is no manager on site

Per US Flag code, flying a flag 24 hours a day is legal, IF the flag is adequately lighted at night.

It is also legal to fly the flag in inclement weather IF the flag is made of an all weather/weather resistant material (such as nylon, etc.).

And of course, anytime a flag is so worn that it no longer represents our country (a decision made by every person, not mandated), then it must be retired from service and properly disposed of. It can be burned, buried, or cut into pieces and disposed of, so long as it is done reverently/with proper honor.

Brian is right...if you fly at night it must be adequately lit...I don't know the procedure on inclement weather, although I think it is allowed if the flag is weather proof...if it is ratty and torn then it needs to be replaced.

and something i learned while i explored this a while ago...
the POW/MIA flag always flies next to the US flag, if they are flown together, and THEN a state or city flag next to that.

THe POW/MIA flag has "precedence" over state flags even...

Most American Legion posts will also take your "retired" flag and often have special ceremonies specifically to honorably burn them.

Thanks for all the GReat comments, etc and MaryA1, for the URL on flags, etc. That answered my question and will contact the Vet. Assoc. here to dispose of our flag that is being replaced.

Another option to dispose of your flags is to contact a Boy Scout troop. While I can not speak for every troop in the US, I can say that every one I have ever come across would gladly take a retired flag for proper disposal. Flag etiquette is typically taken very seriously in the organization.
