I'm curious how other HOA's take care of this. We have 2 board members and their wives are on the lanscaping committee. Is this normal or allowed considering the amount of money landscaping entails?

Our documents state that only one person per household can be on the board of directors at any one time. As for committees, they usually report to the board and I wouldn't see a problem with the spouses volunteering since any decisions would need to be finalized by the board of directors.

Calvin, it fairly common is small HOAs and with the apathy exhibited by many homeowners.

The problem I see is that we spent a large sum of money for us on additional landscaping to make the place look pretty at the beginning of the year and if you have 2 of 5 members on the board who are related then all they need to do is convince one more person to agree to pass any spending being done.

Are the board members related or are the board members related to committee members? There are usually stipulations on being related and being on the board, unless you each are an owner. Check your documents.

If the board members are related to committee members then there should be enough checks and balances in place to keep everything straight.
