Has anyone conducted training and orientation for board members? I want to implement such, but don't know where to start. There is so much to cover i.e. Articles of Incorporation, CC&Rs, Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, Resolutions Can anyone provide an outline of their orientation/training that might be helpful?

Joyce - Our city has classes like that. Brings in experts each session to cover exactly what you are wanting to do. Cities have a stake in wanting HOAs to function properly - check with your city to see if they might already have classes. Harold

Take a look at this package. I'm considering asking our board to buy one to use for our association.

Has anyone purchased this survival kit? I am curious to hear if it was worth the money. I've started trying to create a Director's Handbook from scratch -- and it's a lot of work!

Joyce,
You may have noticed the name "HindmanSanchez" in the sidebar to the right.
Among their many resources they have a checklist of board orientation topics you might consider as a starting point. It's at
http://www.hindmansanchez.com/files/checklist_of_board_orientation_topics.pdf
While you are there, browse around. You may be surprised at the good things they make available. They also provide no-cost training for board members in two major Colorado cities.
If you are a member of CAI, they have a Board Member "Tool Kit" that might also be an answer to your search.

Congratulations for seeking out information on board training and development. An excellent resource is the Community Associations Institute (CAI) at caionline.org

At my previous co-op homeowners association in Washington, DC, we brought in the experts from CAI, plus the association's counsel, to present a day-long seminar to new Board members. It was an eye-opening experience; very positive and effective.

CAI is a membership organization, but fees are reasonable -- and their resources are outstanding. If a seminar is not feasible for your association, the CAI library has dozens of excellent handbooks and publications on this very subject.
