I don't know if this has ever been addressed, but does anyone know if it is permissible for an association to sell advertising in newsletters or on their website? We are exploring the options of selling in our newsletter to cover costs of printing and postage, but didn't know if we could actually make money off of it to put in our annual budget.

I write our newsletter and used to collect a fee for advertising in it. Additionally, the company I work for advertises in a number of association newsletters, about 20, and also in their directories. There is a company that does only newsletters and directories with no fee to the HOA as the advertisers cover everything.

should be fine... just be sure to record the income on your tax forms, and budget.

Your HOA can make money by selling advertising as long as you record the income correctly and pay the proper taxes on it. Nonprofits are allowed to raise funds as long as the funds are used for programs that fit the original purposes the nonprofit was created.

Thanks for the insight, the purpose is simply to offset some of the minor costs of printing, postage, etc, to keep us from having to raise dues to cover operating costs. Is there anyone out there that does a significant amount of advertising? I Would be curious to see any proposals and plans that you use?

Thanks!

I used to collect ads and fees for our newsletter with 137 homes. I would charge $5, $10 and $20 depending on the size of the ad. You will need to determine the ad fee based on the number of homes, cost of printing/postage, etc. Just depends on what your goal is in this. Also, take into consideration the amount of time it will take to receive the ads in a format you can use and the actual collection of the fees.

A neighborhood near mine that is much bigger ended up with so many ads generating a lot of revenue. There ended up being more ads than useful information and you could lose the message you are trying to get out to the neighborhood.
