I actually found this forum one afternoon. I had set aside the afternoon to find as many HOA websites as I could. This was my "homework" before initiating creation of a website for our association.

The URL for the www.palomacreeknews.org was limited to community members only so I was not able to learn much from that one.

Do most HOAs have restricted sites like this? I found about 25% of the ones that I found.. but restricted ones probably don't show up on GOOGLE search .

I also would love to see examples of other sites and ideas on the types of info included.

We are a Condo association in Northern Va so our needs may differ from a regular HOA.

Creating a website can be very inexpensive. We paid $400 to ahve one designed & hosted for a year. Then we had a meber join our Board who is a techie. He completely change it (for the better) at home. Now we will pay only about $75 year for our web address & email. www.wildingpointe.org

Investigate all your option before paying a bunch of money. Our former designer also was going to charge us $50 an hour for changes (ouch!)

Our HOA Secretary recently purchased a book and set of CD's (Create Your Own Website) at SAM's.
Cost $19.99. She set up a web page for us using the disks, found us a server and a domain.(maintenance cost $7.00 per month)
The site is not complete yet but you can view it at
whisperingoaks.us.
If you have any questions, direct them to me and I'll have our secretary contact you.

We've just started ours, www.palermo-hoa.org. The annual cost is just under $120 and I as the webmaster do not charge anything to maintain it. Our management company wanted $120 per month!

My HOA uses www.athomenet.com. They offer a bunch of features, and it is easy to set-up and add information. You can keep information behind the ID access so it can only be viewed by residents (such as your directory/address book), or you can make features visable to anyone (such as facilities/amenities or homes for sale).

For a 100-home neighborhood, the costs range from $40 to $70 per month. For a 500-home neighborhood, the costs range from $55 to $85 per month.

It is not the cheapest option, but it does provide a very professional site.

If you decide to use www.athomenet.com, let them know that Justin from Three Chimneys Farm referred you - they love referrals.

We recommend Community123.com, the company that created and runs HOATalk.com. They offer all the latest features and will even add new custom features for free.

They are now offering 6 months of Free service:
...a 2 month free trial, then 4 more months free if you decide to keep the site.

Community123.com is unique in that they actually build your complete web site for you, at no charge (including scanning paper documents). Other companies only give you a blank template and you have to build the site.

Another unique feature is private tools for the Board, including a private discussion forum, like this one.

After the free trial, the price is great too, starting at $19.95 for 50 homes and $39.95 for 500 homes, much less than athomenet.com.

Check them out at: www.Community123.com

I designed our website:

www.restonheights.com

I just made another post described that we have both an HOA and a Neighborhood Association and this webpage encompasses both.

I've been playing around with HTML and so forth since the mid-90s so this was easy and inexpensive for me to put up. I also have a message board which is part of it and a good number of the neighbors enjoy and use it regularly.

I started this website on a whim and it wasn't adopted as the official site of our neighborhood until several months after I created it.

I am still working on ours, but we are also trying to tie more into the community and build business support. An interesting note is that I have gotten almost all of our city and county council people to write for it.

I recently mocked up a site for our enitre community - it's a working model but haven't launched it officially. I've included a forum that can separate each neighborhood so each association can have their own private area. The idea is to support the entire community by centralizing news and information affecting everyone, and at the same time allowing a restricted area for just those items that pertain to your association.

Would appreciate any feedback. The url is in my signature.

thanks,

Ken

Steve, yours is a website to be proud of. Clean, functional, not too busy, aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate.

$400 to Designed, developed and host for a year is cheap! We use a hosting service that charges 66 per year plus 12 for the domain name. We have a techie that makes our upgrades for free too. By the way $50 is a bargain for a web developer to work on a small job. Most developers only take on small sites as a favor. We couldn't find anyone willing to come over and talk with us about designing a site or going through the task of setting it up and getting the domain name. The minimum time quoted was 4 hours at $50 which didn't even include building the site or the hosting fees. I think you got a bargain at $400.

Setting up a website doesn't need to be that costly or time consuming depending on how complex you want to make it.

I use GoDaddy since I taught myself the basics of putting one together and uploading changes to it. A couple of neighborhoods I know use Community123 because of their help with the initial setup.

You might also want to consider contacting some surrounding high schools for help. I've found that a great number of them offer internet classes and will help neighborhoods set up their own website as a part of their community service.

If you do go with something that's going to cost a monthly fee, you might want to consider setting aside a small area on the main page for "sponsors" such as realty companies. I've found that they're more than excited to cover expenses in exchange for getting their name associated with a community.
