| We just moved into our community and have never lived in a community with a HOA. Our HOA is just one year old. We have three board members. We have one committee (ACC). So far, every meeting has been a complaining session. There are several of us homeowners who want to setup several committees. Do HOA's have different committees and can you give us ideas on different committees? Our board seems to be very reluctant in setting them up and what there jobs should be. Our board is very old school. We collect over $100,000 a year and we have not had one activity/event for our children. (We are the last phase the first homes are about 3 to 4 years old.) We wanted to setup committees like what a P.T.O. organization would have. |

| Yes, you can committees for many purposes including a social committee, landscape committee, pool committee, etc. Have a look at the free publications at caionline.org for HOA overview information. |

We had this problem when the HOA was transferred from the developer to the homeowners. I would volunteer to do things but never taken up on the offers. Since I wanted to be involved in our community and see that we had a sense of community, I started a Women's Club. Many neighborhoods have these. We would sponsor social activities (cook out, easter egg hunt, kids pool parties, adult luau, halloween parking for safety, decorating the entrance to the subdivision, etc). I also took on the project of writing the monthly newsletter and then became a board member. The women's club no longer exists and we do not have people volunteering to help with various activities so we do not have everything we would like to see. I recommend that maybe you start something on your own. We raised money for the band that played at the luau or asked to be reimbursed for expenses related to certain activities through the social fund in the annual budget. Good luck! |

Our HOA has standing committees included in our bylaws which standing committees and are attached to the Board through liasions. We currently have a Bylaw committee of three members whose task is to review our current bylaws and any bylaw amendments and their liasion is the Secretary of the Board. We also have a Social committee of four members who work with the Social and Public Affairs Director in planning all the social events, workshops, and the bi-monthly newsletters. There is also a Block Watch committee and a Galloping Gourmet group that meets monthly and has a potluck dinner. The GG's is an adult only group of full-timers. |

JulieS, I finally got around to reading previous posts and responses you had written. I’m very impressed to hear of the involvement you have with your community. It’s very encouraging. I feel that our by-laws may need some “tweaking” over time but, for right now, they are fine, although they do need to be enforced. Here lies the problem. I believe that many of the HO are not getting involved because they don’t know what is at stake. I feel that many more HOs would be more involved if they were educated on the daily functions of an HOA community. As they say “behind the scenes” I will be on the BOD, soon enough. I can’t promise to make everything perfect but I will enforce all the CC&Rs and I will try to educate as many HO as possible, in hopes of getting more volunteers and just more involvement in general! I’m hoping to anyway. Thank you and all the other members of HOATalk for sharing your knowledge with me. It will be because of all of you that my wife and I remain happy living in an HOA community. I wish you lived in our HOA. We could use you. Have you gone to a Board meeting as a unit (whomever is interested in setting up the committees)? My dream homeowner would be someone who came to a board meeting, suggested AND volunteered for a committee, presented a plan as to how it would function, who was volunteering to serve on it and asking for board authority to proceed. My initial thought was that the board may still be feeling their way through their responsibilities. They most likely do not grasp what they are supposed to be doing yet let alone figuring out committees. If my suggestions is worthy of consideration and it works, I'd love to hear about it. Good Luck! |
