Does an owner of the gas station have a right to ask the same thing from a prospective employee?

The Board has the obligation and mandate to spend the association money wisely, just as any other employer. Even after all that no association should have just one member or the manager sign checks alone. There should be an audit as directed in the documents and all expenditures and receipts should be recorded and that can fall on the manager also.

Note that Robert said "the Board" - An indivudual Board member should not be asking for this info outside of a meeting setting or in private. This is a Board request, not a personal inquiry.

Over twenty years ago, after finding out I could not drink all they can make, even if I tried 24/7, I quit. I still get the urge to get drunk so now I act drunk......or worse.

It is a good idea to check on the background of anyone that has access to Association money or private business. On a professional stand point having the entire Board of Directors involved is the most logical. We all decide when it comes to anyone providing a service for our Association.

You seem to run a pretty tight ship up there, or over there or down there, tells us a little about your HOA. Words like, we get all the board to decide, etc, etc, come pretty easy for you. Lots of folks in HOAs have never seen the board members because they don't live there or the owners don't live there and apathy rules in some. I live in a condo mish-mash that can do a good job and then turn around and act like space aliens. It certainly makes it interesting at times.

RobertR1, After reading through many of the posts on this site, I have definitely come to the conclusion that up here in Virginia we're doing pretty good at our HOA, with just a few bumps in the road. It must be a zoo in some places where things are a mish-mash. Do you know if there is "work in them thar hills" to make an occupation out of apathy?

I just couldn't resist a response to running a pretty tight ship up there. After reading hundreds and hundreds of posts, those of us who feel that we have our association acts together are just in shock when we read some of the posters and their bizzare questions or statements on the stupidity and behavior of so called human beings. The lessons that I have learned from some of the posts is that just when you think that you have heard it all, something even more weird pops up. I question as to how could anyone be that brazen or uninformed but that's the nature of the H.O.A. beast. It takes no smarts to do the right thing and contribute to the betterment of our own lives but not everyone has figured it out yet.

Folks come hundred or thousands of miles to buy property on the Beach, and pay big bucks and big condo dues. They can live anywhere and have to keep up their dues and assessmnets, thousanda of dollars. Couple years goes by and they may rent or use the place for a second home or let friends or employees use it. Then one day they happen to notice a couple loose pickets on their deck or some noisy renter moves in with 15 people and 3 dogs. Now if you happen to live there and people recognize you, they might call you aside and ask about these things that are bothering them. So, being a good neighbor, you start saying words like Documents, Master deed, apportionment, rules of conduct, etc, etc, and you can just watch the curtain fall across their eyes. They may shake their heads and tsk, tsk, or laugh, or act surprized or not, and make promises they are going to find out about all this and definitly they will write the board, call the manager, and attend the next meeting. And that is the extent of their obligation to be part of the community and protect their investment.
This can go on year after year with absentee owners. You have somewhat of a captive audience if the live here and they usually end up getting involved it something. And if they do attend an annual meeting they want so bad to know everything is just find they will listen to some canned elevator music that the board spreads around. Have a big Bar b que, drink a lot, play golf and visit dream condos on display, avoid making eye contact when the meeting is done and they have no questions. Then on Sunday leave and go some where else. Then life goes on just like it did the day before the meeting. Oh yes, they don't seem to notice that everything is freshly planted, cut. and groomed and the flower pots are sitting around near stairways and elevator and the fire lanes have just been restriped, sometimes the paint is still wet. Last but not least, they want to know where you can find them a good reliable cleaning lady.

AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH !!! It is a good thing that there are some folks like you and me and so many of our wonderful responders on this web site. Anyone who has ever been in the work force knows that there are shakers and movers and then there are the "users".

KUDOWS TO ALL OF YOU PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE LIVING IN HOA'S A GOOD EXPERIENCE. AND THANKS TOO !!!

RobertR1, Yeah, but getting all the Board to agree isn't so easy. We have one member that considers an issues in a self-serving way (what's in it for me, or how will this effect me?) and then there are is one who make decisons based on self-interest (that owner is a friend of mine, or I want to do such and such on my house. So, our ship has a few leaks, but I'm padding as fast as I can since I can't swim.

I wondered where those two guys went to. Never thought they would end up in Virginia. I offer to advice if a person is paddling as hard as they can. They are among the few, the chosen, the US Marines. I live close to Parris Island and have great respect fo the Corp.
