I have it on the best authority that the only way you can find out e-mail addresses of posters here would be for the individual to post their e-mail address on this forum. HoaTalk suggests that you obtain a new e-mail address from hotmail or similar and post that. Then if you have a need to contact someone personally, you post that new address, then once you make contact you can dele new address.

I noticed that if you go to-
http://www.hoatalk.com/Forum/tabid/55/view/sendemail/uid/10751/Default.aspx

First replace the five digit uid (user id)(in this case 10751- mine) with the uid of the individual you would like to email and it takes you to a form within the software. You can use that form to send another member an email and still keep their and your email addy private. They would have to give you their uid # first. You can find your uid # by clicking the My Account link at the top of the page.

I hope this doesn't break any rules but it seems to be functional.

No offense, but I'd much rather open a free temporary email address and post that than give out my user ID #.

A nice feature for HOA Talk would be to provide an email link in the left column which would create the message page described by WayneB3. This would allow readers to write contributors directly without revealing the email addresses of either the sender or receiver. The inclusion of the email link could be at the user's discretion by checking the appropriate box in the User's account.

I don't disagree with any of these suggestions if they are taken after considering: Will the quality of help be diminished by this personal contact. We all tend to gravitate to the people that agree with us and shy away from those who don't agree with us. The way it is now, anyone posting has to read all opinions, good and bad.
I would suggest the quality of the information we provide would suffer because of lack of diversity.

I would also not like to put extra demands on the regular posters on the site. Someone asks for your e-mail and then sends you some nasty stuff is not acceptable. I would want the best of both worlds and would like to have the e-mails of regular posters so I could discuss specific concerns, but I have no desire to be able to contact folks that just post for advice.
I would not want the site to be some kind of service where some are considered to be more capable to answer questions. I thnik we all deal with this just fine, and know after a time who knows more about specific areas of association living.

I think you have to be a paying sponsor to get direct access to the membership.

The bad thing about throw away email addys is that you have to register a valid email to get one. Which in reality is akin to signing up for a bunch of spam.

hoatalk user id is not a ss#...I don't understand the concern.

Because knowing someone's forum user ID could make the account hackable.

I suppose that's a legitamite concern...but so is registering personal information with any website.

If someone really wanted your user id they could just cycle through the numbers until your handle popped up. I'm sure a hacker would have a much more efficient method.

Just a quick note on this: Per our privacy policy posted at the link on the bottom of every page: HOATalk does not share member email addresses with any 3rd party, including sponsors.

Having the UID would not allow others to change your account or see your email address. However, the feature mentioned is not officially supported at this time.
