FL coalition forming to stop double taxation charges on gated communities for street lights. Municipalities collect taxes for this service but keep the funds and force the gated community to contract individually with power company for lighting. Non gated communities receive this service for free. 31,000 FL gated communities paying unfairly. Taxes collected should be rebated to offset cost. If interested in joining contact [email protected]

Municipalities collect taxes for what service? Where's the language that says gated communities are like this but non-gated communities are different? Is that a state law? County? Local?

I live in a gated community. We don't pay municipal or county taxes on our streetlights, nor do we have a contract with, say, FPL for our street lights. If we did enter into one of those FPL agreements for streetlights then we still wouldn't be taxed by the county on any of it.

It is a state law that services be provided equally to each entity ( water, sewer, street lights, etc.) If annexed to the city they will have an ordinance requiring street lighting. You pay for street lights by establishment of a County Lighting District which will show on your annual tax bill as L_ _ ? This whole scenario is created by agreement between the City and the developer committing the gated community to absorb the utility costs once annexed by the municipality wherein they collect property taxes to cover the cost of services from all residents but only absorb the cost of street lights where developer agreements don't exist. Double taxation as ANNEXED gated communities do not receive the services dictated by state law. The amount of collected but undistributed tax funds to gated communities is estimated at over $100 million per year throughout Florida.

I'll take your word for it. I checked and my county does have lighting districts, although we're not in one. Nor are we located in any municipality, being firmly platted in an unincorporated part of the county. Good luck in your endeavors.

Check your documents for developer agreements. Fight annexation if you are a gated community.
