Here are some threads on this forum about gates. Note:
It's best to place any comments in a new topic or this thread rather than reactivate an old thread.
Hope they help:

Going from non-gated to gated community? 2005 thread discussing costs.

KEY CARDS - for gate, pool & laundry 2007 thread talking about hotel type key cards for gate and costs.

Depends, if the barcodes are affixed to a vehicle than only those vehicles can enter and barcode stickers are cheaper.

RFID tags are more costlier and can get lost, stolen or given away and if not reported as so and/or the ID# not deactivated will still allow allow entry.

Our system uses RFID, remotes/clickers, and keypad/phone activation... no barcodes.

The RFID tags we're looking at are window decals that cannot be removed without destroying them. They are essentially like the window stickers used for some highway toll systems.

The 2 biggest concerns are cost and that the RFID reader might read from a vehicle further back in line to enter.

The systems can be tuned or focused for distance. Not sure if the topography of your entry area would make this more or less successful.

I've never seen that happen. The distance is very small and focused.

RFID's can be cloned via a portable reader while someone is driving around or parked. it's done with rfid credit cards all the time at airports and is popular with the criminal element for id theft and such

True Robert I won't argue the technical possibilities.

However, there is little to be gained financially by doing this for entry into a community.

Thieves who do this cloning rely on anonymity to then make purchases or withdrawls and don't typically break into homes where the risk of being seen or getting caught is much higher.

That alone is not a significant risk to using BCs or other means over RFIDs IMO.
