All,

We have all heard and read about the responsibilities of the Board, an Officer, a Property Manger, etc. What would you consider the responsibilities of a Member to be?

I'll start off with one:

Volunteer to serve on the Association at least once every x years.
(x being equal to the number of lots divided by the number of positions (Board, Committee, etc.) that need to be filled annually)

- Stay informed about all aspects of Association business (budgets, expense, collections, receivables, payables, etc).
- Meet the financial and other obligations of Association membership

Tim,

I like your 'Volunteer' idea, but in our association your formula would mean each member has to volunteer once every 95 years.

Come to think of it - our members would like that formula

To educate themselves on what living in an association means, how it operates and how it affects their property values. I would be happy if they just learned that the BOD does more than fine owners.

I say know your in a HOA and have to pay dues...

Also like to drill into people that your board members are elected by the general membership and FROM the general membership so that the general membership doesn't have to be involved in the daily operations of their HOA. It's important when you cast your vote, you do so because you don't want to be in that office or you do. A HOA is not only a corporation of which you are a shareholder of...It's also a small government in which you live. Manage it well...

Attached is an article from CAI.

As far as serving within the Association, the answer I heard most is "when h**l freezes over"

Good Question
As a member i think members should attend meeting,
help when needed, pay dues, have a problem contract board,
and put there input in what they think would help make a
good place to live. Most of all work together

To follow the CC&R's and pay their assessments on time other than that, they have no legal responsibilities to the HOA. If you want to talk about what their responsibilities SHOULD BE, that is a whole nother kettle of fish.

Studies show that 5 out of 4 people have problems with fractions

As a member of the board, I'm happy if they just pay their dues and follow the rules.

Ideally, while not a "responsibility," I'd love it if our HOA members would offer more positive suggestions for improving our community. I edit our Newsletter and invite suggestions enthusiastically a couple of times a year. Usually get 2-3 good ones.

read the rules.
pay your assessments
learn the names of your neighbors, at least two doors/houses/lots on either side of you, and those above/below or behind you.
go to meetings, and listen.
read the rules again. and again.
follow the rules. read them again.
go to meetings. listen. a lot.
pick up trash on the street as you walk past it.
follow the rules you agreed to when you signed the contract.
volunteer to help.
send cookies to your neighbors.

A good discussion. Thank you all for your inputs.

As Glen pointed out, there is a difference between what the member is required to do and what they should do.

Richard, The article wasn't attached. I suspect it exceeded the size limit. If your willing to send it to my e-mail I would appreciate it: [email protected]

Those who are part of the board have to always acquaint themselves with the rules and whatever components are changing. Money has always been the biggest issue when it comes to this. And that would include collection, expenses and budget for the coming years.

Each one has the right to speak, whatever position they are in, but that would not guarantee the following.
