Has anyone created an exterior color chart for a 356 townhouse community? They are colonial style. This has been an open item for approximately 2 years now. Our homes were built in the late 1980's. I contacted one of the builders and they no longer have the color charts for our neighborhood on file. I thought about contacting a local college with architectural design (interior/exterior) classes to see if students could create color charts as a project. Not sure that made sense... but we are at a loss as to how to do this or where to get started. Suggestions?

Depending on how complete your records are, start there.

Declaration packages may or may not have listed the authorized paint colors so the new owner was informed of them.

Architectural or Administrative files should have documented somewhere what colors the homes are painted.

If your Association does annual inspections, checking past inspections may list the colors for the lot.

You can also ask those lots who you don't have records of (or can't figure out) what colors they were told.

Hope this helps,

Tim

Colors change every few years anyways. I think every 5 or so. I would consult a paint store like Sherwin Williams who may point you in the right direction. Plus give discount if you use their paints etc. Interior designers are a good source to consult.

You may ask for existing paint colors from the neighbors if they have a leftover can in their garage. Color matching can be done at most home stores. This way you may be able to find a source of color scheme in the companies old paint archives.

We used to use a "Sawyer white" color on our trim. That color no longer exists. We were able to find an adequate subsitute after consulting the paint store. They luckily had the color combo on their records but the name had changed. Was able to get enough old references to develop a new chart. Plus you may want to consider vinyl siding colors if vinyl siding is approved in your HOA. We allowed it in ours after it was a better product for our houses after some aging.

Most legit paint stores have the ability to match paint from a paint chip if you can secure one from a property. It will also be important to note that names of paint are unique to the store so if you find a color chart reference that is half the battle, you will then need to find the store. While paint places update their colors every so often they should be able to recreate what you have, but also bear in mind that paint fades with sun and weather.
